The Nearness of Nihility

nihility - noun - nonexistence, nothingness (Google).

Lately, I've been in more than out just as many of you have. In as in inside the house, that is. The problem with doing any kind of quarantining (Yes, self-alienation is in vogue these days.) for whatever reason is that at the beginning, middle, and end of the day, as a writer, I am faced with nihility, which is not topical. The Big Bang Theory aside, can anything truly worth possessing come from nothing?

Sure, if I wanted to dig deeply and expand on the theme of nothingness, I could delve into existential philosophy, nihilism or anything else that has been explored ad infinitum by others who actually have upper-level degrees in the subjects. I could quote the experts, and then present my take. But if I were to do that, it might put you in a terribly dark mood.  Let's face it. No one wants to be in that black abyss sans a ladder up, out, and into the fresh air of optimism and existence.

Covid is being blamed for much of our reluctance to use the exit ladder out of the darkness of our minds and habitats, but before Covid, there was SAD, a.k.a. Seasonal Affected Disorder, that plagued all those who don't live in California or Florida or anywhere that Winter inhabits greedily. The sufferers self-quarantined without even putting a name to it. (In the pre-Covid era, did we even use the word?) Of course, there were many who got sick with the usual suspects of viruses, like the flu. Just think. Next year, we might be so inured to Covid or any strain of it that it could no longer come up as a lead story on the news. And wouldn't that be grand? I jest, naturally.

I suppose the bottomline is that all writers, journalists especially, would probably want to write about anything, even nihility, then write about Covid. So I won't continue along those lines.

Just to let you know, there is no takeaway here except to realize that it is okay to embrace nihility once in a while and just be. I guess I'll spend the rest of the day in that mode.
