Put a Little Zumba in Your Step

Zumba - noun - a hybrid exercise routine combining dance and aerobics.

If you are attempting to weather winter inside, and consequently feel weak and withered, try a little Zumba. I will wager that after one twenty-minute session, you will wake up and out of your funk. According to the medical experts, fitness is as essential to well being as a healthy diet and vitamin D. I know most of us don't relish taking time out from binge-watching Yellowstone, popping bonbons and Doritos in combination, and sipping chardonnay to generate some sweat, but you have to get up sometime. Why not segue into something that is going to increase your heart rate and get your blood pumping? (Don't forget that the perspiration stains on your new Walmart sweats will wash out.)

Interestingly enough, Zumba has a serendipitous history. In the mid-1990s, Columbian choreographer, aerobics instructor Alberto Beto Perez found himself faced with a predicament. He showed up to teach a class one day without his usual recorded playlist of music in tow. Since he didn't have the time to go back for it, he ended up improvising with salsa and merengue tapes that he just happened to have available. What emerged was a class that combined dance choreography and aerobics: Zumba! I love it when lucrative businesses worth 500 million come to fruition from mistakes. I should be as lucky as Beto (womensfitnessclubs.com).

I know what you are thinking: she is advertising something I am totally incapable of doing. Not so fast. Okay, so today's blog does come off as an infomercial, but don't lose confidence and stop reading. There are myriad YouTube videos for Zumba beginners that you may wish to try. For example, check out this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZNpCqF9XRqQ. It mixes simple movements and electronica and is only twenty minutes in length. Heck, I just tried it and survived the moves, but maybe not the music. Fear not. You can always lower the volume and play your own set list from the '70s like normal contemporaries.

Good luck. Start out slowly and work your way up to speed. Just remember: I am not responsible if you get too enthusiastic and throw out your back. But do try it; take it five minutes at a time if I just managed to daunt you with the business about your back. Let me know how it went :).
